Estimation of Atrial Fibrosis with the ECG
Researchers at IBT investigated whether the amount of diseased fibrotic tissue in the atria can be estimated non-invasively and quantitatively with features extracted from P waves of the 12-lead ECG. They conducted a large-scale simulation study including anatomical variability of the atria, their orientation angle and the thorax to obtain 540,000 12-lead ECG P waves. They found out that with a combination of different P wave features, an estimation of the left atrial volume fraction covered with fibrosis was feasilibly with an absolute error of 8,78% on average.
