Eikonal models offer a faster alternative to simulate cardiac arrhythmias compared to more detailed biophysical models. Eikonal models simulate the electrical wave propagation. These models trigger an electrical response in cardiac cells by applying an artificial current that mimics the diffusion current. The properties of this “pseudo-diffusion current” have a direct influence on the cardiac cell response and computational times. On the other hand, the real diffusion current can be measured in the biophysical models. The real diffusion current shape varies depending on the excitation pattern and other factors including the ionic model, conductivity, mesh resolution. Neglecting these relationships in the pseudo-diffusion currents might cause significant inaccuracies in the simulated mechanisms of cardiac arrhythmia. Therefore, it is important to assess which changes of the diffusion current should be included in the eikonal models when studying cardiac arrhythmias.
